A MODERNISED CONCEPT WITH A WIDER OFFER
PORTUGAL RETAIL TOUR
For once, we look at the service industry for our virtual retail tour in Portugal. We travel to the north of the country, in the Amarante region, to discover a concept that has drawn on its tradition to renew itself.
GIVING PLEASURE IN A DAILY CHORE
Very often laundry is synonymous with chore par excellence. Even more so when you have to go to a public laundromat with a dull atmosphere lit by neon lights giving it a hospital-like atmosphere. Unfortunately necessary, this activity generally ranks at the top of the list of least appreciated household chores (assuming some are appreciated…). But we could change our minds with the brand new Lavandaria Morinha laundry concept inaugurated in April 2020 in Vila Meã in northern Portugal!
INSPIRATION IN TRADITION
Designed by Stu.dere agency, the retail design is inspired by the aesthetics of the old traditional Portuguese wash houses of the 17th and 18th centuries, located in communal buildings not far from a stream from which the water used for cleaning came. These spaces had become social gathering places for the community. In this respect, the agency wanted to create a warm atmosphere between tradition and modernity where clients would feel comfortable.
A VEGETAL TOUCH RECALLS THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE OLD WASH HOUSES
To do this, they used materials such as white marble and green tiles echoing the planter hanging from the ceiling, adding a vegetal touch to the concept.
A RANGE OF NEW AND COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES…
The concept is divided into 2 distinct areas. The entrance to the laundromat is indicated by the bright red neon logo on the wall. Also present in this area is a small space equipped with a vending machine, ideal for a snacking break between 2 loads of laundry.
… ALL IN SELF-SERVICE
But here you don’t just wash your things, you can also darn them. In fact, LAVANDARIA MORINHA offers a 2nd space, L-shaped, dedicated to services: repair, sewing and ironing, a fully equipped area is available for self-service.
IN CONCLUSION: A MODERN, WELCOMING & FUNCTIONAL CONCEPT
Many traditional elements of linen care are therefore found here. The agency was able to bring them together to give a warm side to the concept. But beyond the atmosphere, they contribute to bring a real complementary offer that makes total sense. This concept would be very appropriate in a more urban area where customers rarely have access to or possession of a sewing machine.
Portuguese retail design is regularly in the news. It is often inspired by the country’s architecture or traditions. A strong and symbolic signature that sets it apart. A perfect example is the concept of the CLAUS PORTO brand and their new New York flagship.
